Loa Borchert comes to us with 23 years of combined RN and Nurse Practitioner experience. She received her BSN at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and spent the next 12 years working as an RN in newborn nursery, neonatal intensive care, various summer camps, and in a residential treatment center for emotionally disturbed children. Traveling Nurse Corps helped to expand her collection of nursing licenses. After deciding to settle in Texas, Loa enrolled at the University of Texas at Arlington and earned her Master of Science in Nursing, Child Health, and graduated as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. Parkland Health & Hospital Systems provided her with a wonderful background of experience in pediatrics. She initially worked with high-risk teenagers at the Young Adult Clinic; then she began managing the medical care of children from ages 3-21 in their Youth & Family Centers (school-based clinics). Prior to her joining Children's in 2004, Loa completed 10 years' service at Parkland.
Loa feels that her daily contact with the babies in the Fogelson Plastic Surgery and Craniofacial Center brings her back to her beginnings in the newborn nursery, which is one of the favorite parts of her career.
Her role and responsibilities at Children's Medical Center of Dallas include:
- Initial evaluation and diagnosis of babies referred for plagiocephaly (abnormal head shape) or ear molds for abnormal ear shape in the newborn period
- Educate and support parents regarding the diagnosis and treatment options
- Initiate and complete the referral process to obtain services for cranial molding devices
- Follow up with families, community agencies, and referral resources as needed
Her roots are in New Orleans, Louisiana, and she enjoys visiting the Crescent City whenever she can get away.
